What is Wegovy?
Wegovy (Semaglutide) is an FDA-approved drug for chronic weight management. It is recommended to be used by adults with obesity or are overweight and have other health complications such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol. It is meant to be used in conjunction with a reduced-calorie diet and with an exercise routine.
Wegovy is the first of its type to be approved for chronic weight management for people with general obesity since 2014. The drug is meant to be used by patients who have a body mass index (BMI) that is 27 or greater who have one or more weight-related health issues. It is also meant for people with a BMI that is greater than 30 who don’t currently have a weight-related health concern.

How does Wegovy injections work for weight loss?

Wegovy (semaglutide) is an injection that is given once a week and assists in weight loss. It works very well for adults who require chronic weight management. Wegovy is used in addition to a reduced-calorie diet that incorporates physical activity.
Wegovy helps to regulate appetite and food intake. Wegovy is a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist. It mimics the action of the glucagon-1 peptide which is naturally produced by the but and pancreas. This peptide targets the brain which helps to regulate appetite, especially after you have eaten. It also slows how fast the stomach empties. This helps you to feel fuller for longer. Wegovy also enhances insulin production.

What is the difference between Ozempic and Wegovy?

Ozempic and Wegovy are two brand names for semaglutide that are used by Novo Nordisk. They are both injectable medications. Ozempic is for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and also to prevent major cardiovascular problems in patients. Wegovy is designed for chronic weight management and assists with weight loss.

How long does it take to lose weight on Wegovy?

Weight loss with Wegovy injections can start in the first month of treatment. The full effects will take longer, however. The full effects may not be seen for a few months or longer. Studies have generally been done over a 68-week period. During this time, patients have lost 35 lbs. on average or about 15% of their weight. The control groups in the studies have shown a 2.5% or 6 lb. weight loss in the same time period. In the trials, 83% of the people taking Wegovy lost a minimum of 5% or more of their weight.
The reason for more of the weight loss coming after the first month is probably due to the need for Wegovy to be introduced to the body slowly. Doses are started at lower levels to reduce the possibility of side effects from the medication. It usually takes 17 weeks for a patient to reach the full maintenance dose.
The maintenance dose of Wegovy is 2.4 mg, taken once per week. These will come in pre-filled pens that contain a single dose. You can do this at home and your healthcare provider will show you how to use these.

What are the most common side effects of Wegovy?

-

-
